The government has commissioned the Kwa Katiwa earth dam in Kangundo, Machakos County. Speaking during the commissioning of the project, Water and Irrigation Principal Secretary Zainabu Hussein said that the government is committed to mitigating water shortage problems in the region and entire nation.
Hussein also said that the government has set aside Sh2 billion for the implementation of National Water Harvesting and Storage Programme targeting the arid and semi-arid areas.
The said amount of money will be used in sinking water pans, small dams and boreholes across the nation in order to increase the availability of the commodity for both small irrigation and domestic usage.
The new project looks forward to achieving Sustainable Development Goals, ending poverty and provision of clean water and sanitation. Before the launch of the programme, residents of arid and semi-arid have been traveling for miles to get the rare commodity. The able citizens are forced to part with an around Sh30 to get 20 liters of water or stay without.
Lack of water in these areas has not only led to spreading of diseases but also stalled empowerment of women in the society.
