Security in Wajir County has been intensified after the government deployed one hundred National Police Reservists (NPR).
Wajir County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara said the police reservists have been deployed along the border of Wajir East and Tarbaj sub-Counties in a bid to boost security.
Mr Kibaara said the officers will provide security to schools in the county following last week’s terror attack at a Wajir primary school.
Speaking on Monday to journalists, Mr Kabaara added that the police reservists would assist in patrols in the schools along the Kenyan border with Somalia that have increasingly become a soft target.
“Earlier today, we deployed 100 well-armed national police reservists to the border areas along Wajir East and Tarbaj sub-Counties in a bid to boost security,” said the county commissioner.
Last week on Friday, Al-Shabaab militants attacked Qarsa Primary School and killed three non-local teachers.
Following the attack, non-local teachers working in Wajir County have started to leave the region citing insecurity.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has called on the government to establish a special unit of police that will guard teachers and learners in North Eastern.
Mr Sossion in a statement said non-local teachers in Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Lamu and Tana River counties have become a soft target for terrorists.
“A teacher like any other professional has a right to enjoy peace, professional freedom and protection. It is the duty of the government to offer the protection,” he said.
