The government has embarked on a drought mitigation programme in Lamu. The programme involves the distribution of relief food such as maize, beans and rice to residents in the county. Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who fled their homes due to al-Shabaab attacks in the region were given priority during the exercise.The areas which were most affected by the terrorist attacks include Pandanguo, Poromoko and Maleli among other areas.Lamu County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo on Thursday confirmed that more than 2000 bags of food had been distributed to various regions including Witu, Bar’goni, Basuba and Hindi. “We received 1,000 bags of rice, 400 bags of maize, 400 bags of beans and cartons of cooking fat and fortified food,” said Kitiyo as quoted by The Star.This comes barely a week after the government launched a school feeding programme in Kilifi.The government has reiterated that it is committed to curbing famine being experienced in some sections of the country.
