ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru has asserted the government's commitment to protect journalists and the media.
Speaking on Wednesday on the eve of World Media Freedom Day marked on Wednesday, Mucheru further said the Kenyan government has put in stringent measures to ensure that freedom of the media is protected.
"The government is determined to protect the media space and will take punitive measures on those who harass journalists," he said.
He also urged journalists to report factually and impartially as the country gears up for the August polls, challenging media houses to weed out unqualified scribes.
"As we approach the elections, take it as your patriotic duty to hold the country together, weed out quacks," he noted.
Mucheru's remarks precedes a rise in the number of assaults on journalists witnessed in the recent past.
