The Government, through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources will undertake a scientific research on Lake Kenyatta in Mpeketoni, Lamu County.
The Principal Secretary in the State Department of Environment Charles Sunkuli said the research will seek to establish the root cause of its drying up, reports mygov.go.ke.
He made the remarks in Mpeketoni, in Lamu, during a fact finding inspection of the environmental impacts of Lake Kenyatta.
Sunkuli, who was accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, National Environment Management Authority, Lamu County Government, environmentalist’s and stakeholders noted that the lake was on its verge of extinction unless urgent measures were undertaken to address the vagaries of climate change and human activities affecting the lake.
Noting that the lake, which is the only source of water for thousands of residents of Mpeketoni and its environs was shrinking at an alarming rate hence, threatening the country’s natural resources, Sunkuli called for the formation of an inter-agency coordinating task force, that will ensure the gazettement of the lake and mark the riparian area of the lake to address insecurity.
The Principal Secretary called for a sustained awareness creation of the lake’s sustainability.
He proposed a marathon that would bring the lake into international limelight and turn it into a recreational facility.
He was accompanied by the area MP Julius Ndegwa, Lamu Deputy Governor Eric Mugo and Lamu County Commissioner Patrick Kanyiri among other national and county government officials.
