The national government has assured that it will pay the Nairobi County Government Sh69.4 billion debt it owes the County.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich said Nairobi Governor Dr Evans Kidero was yet to officially present the bill to the Ministry, for processing.
According to him, this could be the reason for the delayed payment.
Kidero indicated that the national government owes the county huge sums of money, a situation that has stalled implementation of various county projects and running of important services to Nairobi city residents.
He also disclosed that this has made it difficult for the County government to offset a total of Sh47 billion it inherited from the local government.
"We haven't been able to settle the debts of about Sh47 billion that we inherited from the local government because the national government owes us a lot of money," said the governor.
The two were speaking at the 5th Annual Congress of the Forum of Chairpersons of Constitutional Commissions and holders of independent offices at Charter Hall, Wednesday.
Kidero noted that his government appreciates the role of independent offices in protecting the sovereignty of the people of Nairobi and Kenya at large.
