Kenya has imported 60 double-stack wagons for the Standard Gauge Railway freight services.
Confirming the development, Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) Managing Director Atanas Maina said that this was the final batch of wagons to be bought this year.
Double stack wagons are used to transport containers where one is placed on the other.
"More are expected by next year," Maina said.
Speaking at the Port of Mombasa when he received the consignment from China on Saturday, Maina said they expected the SGR freight services to begin by December.
He said tha tpiloting for the service is ongoing via daily transportation of the government relief food from the Mombasa Port to Nairobi.
"We are hopeful by early January we shall have fully rolled out the freight services," the MD said.
He also said the KRC board has also created transportation tariffs for cargo.
"We are waiting for Cabinet Secretary's approval before we announce this to the stakeholders," he said.
