State Counsel Erick Masila asked the court to merge two cases where two men have been linked to a group that attacked Nyali Barracks and another case where four suspects are being charged with being members of the al-Shabaab group.

Mr Masila in his application before Mombasa Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi said the two cases should be consolidated as the suspects are connected.

In the first case, Mr Mohammed Kombo and Mr Mahmoud Mohamed were accused of allegedly being part of a group that attacked the Nyali Barracks on November 2, 2014.

The two are accused of being found with two guns stolen from a soldier and a policeman killed in Mombasa and a liquid believed to be an ingredient for an explosive on January 5, 2016.

The two were further accused of violently attempting to rob Private Solomon Onyango of a M4 rifle loaded with 30 rounds and causing damages to the firearm while armed with pangas and machetes.

In the second case, the four suspects Mohammed Kassim, Faraj Swaleh alias Mustafa Kheri, Ali Bwanadi and Kassim Ali alias Abdirahman Saidi are accused of being members of the al-Shabaab group.

The four are also accused of possessing chemicals used to make explosives, a G3 gun, two rifles, 37 rounds of ammunition and holding a meeting in preparation to launch a terror attack in the country.

It is alleged that the four are part a gang that attacked the Kenya Army Nyali barracks after a rifle belonging to a soldier was recovered from a house they used.

During the case, the two suspects through their lawyer, Mr Yusuf Abubakar asked the court to release his clients on bond which Mr Masila opposed.

Counsel Masila asked the court to remand the suspects until the cases were merged.

Magistrate Shitubi ordered for the suspects to be remanded at Shimo La Tewa Maximum Prison.

The case will be heard on April 25.
