Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret and Nakuru will benefit from the construction of major bypasses in the third pillar of the Medium Term Plan beginning from the year 2018 to 2022 in a move aimed at reducing congestion.
Planning Principal Secretary Saitoti Torome Lempaa says the projects will require proper planning to ensure the delays witnessed in infrastructure development in Nairobi are not experienced in other towns.
Residents in the capital as well as the business community are beginning to enjoy the benefits of intense road construction and expansion implemented by the government since 2009 when the construction of the 8 lane Thika Road begun.
The 50km road not only links Nairobi to Thika, but is also part of the highway that goes all the way to Ethiopia. Completed in November 2012, taxpayers paid 32 billion shillings for the project.
Since then, the 28km southern bypass from Mombasa Road to Kikuyu has been completed at 17 billion shillings.
Others are the eastern bypass from Ruiru to Mombasa Road and the northern bypass from Limuru Road to Thika Road.
PS Torome now says the next stop in the Medium Term Plan Three is to focus on other towns which are experiencing population growth.
