The national government has put in place measures to ensure the drought situation affecting the country is addressed.
Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa said the government has made plans to distribute relief food to families affected by drought.
Mr. Wamalwa said that the drought was worsening and hundreds of families face the risk of starvation due to lack of water and food.
He, however, said the national government was working towards ensuring no one died of hunger by providing relief food to the affected counties.
The CS said priority will be given to Garissa, Tana River, Isiolo, Kilifi and Kajiado which are the worst hit of 23 counties.
“The government has mobilised enough resources to ensure relief food got to the affected families on time. The government will continue supplying relief food until the drought ends,” he said.
Speaking at Mombasa Port while receiving relief food from China, Mr. Wamalwa said they will distribute 55,000 of rice to the affected counties.
He also said that they are delivering three million bags of maize to hunger-stricken families across the country.
“We are releasing three million bags of maize from our strategic grain depots to Tana River, Kilifi, Taita-Taveta, Kwale and Kajiado counties. As we speak, trucks loaded with relief food have been dispatched to Tana River and I will personally oversee the exercise,” he said.
