Director of Tertiary Education Robert Masese said the Ministry of Education will build 3,800 classrooms to absorb the growing number of students in schools.

Mr Masese who was speaking in Mombasa told delegates at the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KSSHA) conference that the classrooms will be ready by January, next year.

According to Mr Masese, several institutions are grappling with a large number of students thus putting a strain on the available accommodation facilities, teachers and classrooms following the growing number of Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination graduates.

He said the education ministry has selected institutions which will benefit from the Sh19.9 billion World Bank project.

“The success of the project will depend on how fast the school heads work. The school heads will be required to fill questionnaires on which areas in their schools need to be expanded,” said Mr Masese.

“The increase in the number of students in secondary schools has been caused by the government’s policy of increasing form one intakes, despite the fact that the necessary infrastructure has not been increased at the same pace,” he added.
