The infrastructure sector is set to receive another major boost after the government revealed plans to commission line five of the Mombasa-Nairobi pipeline in December.Kenya Pipeline Commission Managing Director Joe Sang on Wednesday told Baraka FM, that the project is almost complete, adding that plans to commission it are already underway.The commissioning of the project comes at a time when the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) is putting in place measures to eliminate transportation of oil by road. Upon completion, the pipeline is expected to supply 100 million liters of oil in an hour across the nation’s capital and Mombasa.The Sh48 billion project will not only improve safety but also protect the environment.“The pipeline will also enhance safety and protect the environment since transportation of oil via pipeline is the safest, fastest and most environmentally friendly,” said Sang, as quoted by the local daily.The contractor will install new pump stations in different parts of the Coast region including Sultan Hamud, Mtito Andei, Changamwe, Maungu and two pumps in Kipevu.Sang also said talks are underway with the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to do away with the cost of transporting oil.The Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) also has intentions of replacing the Mombasa Nairobi pipeline.
