The government is developing the Konza Technocity, a smart city estimated to cost Sh600 billion in collaboration with the private sector.
Konza City is set to be a regional hub for ICT software and hardware developments and innovations in the country.
ICT CS Joe Mucheru said the Konza Technopolis , projected to attract over 260, 000 skilled workforce, residents and enterprises on completion will be a ‘melting pot’ for science and technology, and innovations in the country.
Speaking at a Nairobi hotel recently during the launch of the Konza Technopolis strategic plan, Mucheru said, the government was developing a smart city that will not only be enjoyable to live in but will also transform the economy of the country.
“Based on the United Nations projections that majority of the 6.3 billion-world population will be living in urban environment by 2050, the government was building a city that will be the engine of the economy,” he said as quoted by mygov.co.ke.
Mucheru said the 132 KV power station, a water project with capacity of 2,000 cubic meters of water per day have been completed as support infrastructure for the project. He added that the government has launched the dualing of the Athi River–Machakos turn-off road as part of efforts to facilitate attract investors to Konza Technopolis
He noted that the city will have a Live Science section that will provide an environment for interdisciplinary scientific and engineering studies and explorations by the academia and ICT industry players to spur innovations.
He said the implementation of phase one of the Konza Technopolis on a 400-acre land was in progress, adding that the area is expected to attract 30, 000 residents, 7, 900 skilled workers and 16, 700 other workers on completion.
