The government will spend a whopping Sh20 billion in buying food that will be distributed to Kenyans in hunger-stricken counties.
Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa said the food will be sourced locally as the Jubilee administration moves to support farmers who still have surplus maize in their stores.
Some of the counties adversely affected by hunger include Tana River, Garissa, Isiolo, and Kajiado.
The CS said priority will be given depending on the number of people affected by drought.
Wamalwa made the remarks when he toured Garsen in Tana River County where he distributed relief food to locals.
He said so far the government has spent Sh7 billion buying relief food, adding that an extra Sh3 billion will be released for the same purpose.
There are currently 23 counties across the country affected by hunger.
The government also recently imported 90,000 of rice and the imported product will be distributed after being offloaded at the Port of Mombasa.
"We shall continue distributing relief food to the affected areas until the drought ends," said Wamalwa who was accompanied by Devolution Chief Administrative Secretary.
He, however, warned leaders who will dare steal the food that stun action will be taken against them.
