The Government has been asked to construct bumps on sections of the Nairobi-Mombasa Road to reduce accident cases along the stretch.

The call was made by Josephat Towet, a security officer at East Africa Portland Cement Company, Athi River plant, who said the road had cost several lives.

Towet said that sections of the road between Mombasa/Namanga interchange, next to Shallom Community Hospital in Athi and savanna Cement Company were black spots.

According to him, several lives are lost on that stretch year in, year out, due to over speeding and reckless driving by ‘irresponsible’ motorists given that it is smooth up to Namanga.

He further noted that the speeding vehicles should be tamed by constructing bumps at the road's bridge next to Portland Senior Staff Hotel, another one at The East African Portland Cement Company's main entrance, and finally at the Savanna Cement Company Limited.

The security officer noted that the accidents also contributed by fact that there was no safe turn offs to Bamburi Cement Company Limited, and Athi River's Shallom Community Hospital, forcing motorists and trucks to make u-turns anyhow at any parts of the road.

He also noted that there was lots of confusion among motorists who wanted to get to Portland cement either from Nairobi or Athi River with those on the highway from either Kitengela or Nairobi, adding that the same main entrance to the firm had a bus stop.

Towet, who spoke to the journalists shortly after witnessing a road accident where a trailer hit a matatu while gaining entry onto the main road at the company said more lives would be lost on the road if the recommendations were not immediately effected.
