Ruiru MP Esther Gathango has asked the government to dialogue with teachers over the planned strike as schools reopen.
Speaking at Ruiru town on Sunday, the lawmaker said that students stand to lose if teachers go on with the planned nationwide strike.
She said that the government and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) officials should consider the plight of students in the event of the work boycott.
“The government and teachers’ union should hold dialogue to avert the planned strike,” said Gathango.
The MP said that strikes have in the past impacted negatively on the education standards.
She education matters are serious and that the government and stakeholders should find lasting solutions to teachers’ demands.
Gathongo differed with the timing of the strike, saying that it will affect the learning calender.
“While we support the grievances being raised by teachers, the timing of the strike is ill-advised,” she said.
Meanwhile, the MP urged students from the constituency to seek bursary funds to further their studies.
Gathongo said that the constituency fund has enough money that has been set aside for purposes of bursaries and scholarships.
