The leaders said the move will help in curbing cases of extrajudicial killing that are currently being witnessed in the country.

They condemned the killings committed by police, saying the government should not be silent on such issues as it directly affects the citizens.

Sheikh Hassan Mohammed from Likoni said police find it easy to shoot someone before finding out whether they are guilty or not, because they have no respect for human life.

He said this can only be stopped by introducing religious education in the police training school.

“I want to challenge the government to ensure only religious officers who respect human dignity graduate to be fully fledged police servicemen and women,” said Sheikh Hassan.

His sentiments were echoed by Mwinyi Mbwana, the director at Licodep, a community based organization that deals with security and radicalization, who criticised police officers for using excessive force when handling terror suspects.

“Our research has shown that most youth become radicalised after witnessing the inhumane nature in which police officers handle their relatives and friends,” said Mwinyi,

“There should be a Muslim sheikh and a Christian cleric at Kiganjo to guide our boys and girls who are recruited to serve our nation as police officers,” said Mwinyi.
