The government has been challenged to create a committee that will look into the disbursement of funds for the elderly people.
Rift Valley Council of Elders Chairman Gilbert Kabage said that the 15 billion disbursed to the elderly people did not reach its intended audience.
Speaking to journalists at Kabazi, Kabage noted that high levels of corruption have seen the cash being diverted to other people’s pockets.
“We are appealing to the government to start proper investigations into where the money is being diverted to. As of now, many of the elderly people are complaining that they have never received the monthly stipend the government disburses to them,” he noted.
Kabage now wants a new committee that will collect the views of the residents in regards to the initiative, before they continue with its implementation.
“Many people have already expressed dissatisfaction with the way the initiative is being carried. We hope that the government would be able to listen to us in regard to the exercise,” he added.
Kabage also appealed to the residents to register themselves with various government ministries, to benefit from such initiatives.
“Majority of the people fear asking about various projects by the government. If this works out well, it would be a very good platform for the government to take care of its elderly. I am appealing to the residents to come and register with it as this will help them live a better life,” added Kabage.
