Kenya Union of Sugarcane Plantation and Allied Workers Union is now appealing to the national government to come to the rescue of Mumias Sugar Company.
The union’s secretary general Francis Wangara said Mumias risks sliding into receivership management over close to a Sh 6 billion owed to debtors.
Wangara said the government has in the past promised to pump in money to the once best managed sugar company but that has not materialised.
He said the debtors gave the company a deadline of February 28 to offset the debts or they move to court to seek for receivership management.
“The deadline is first approaching and the government is doing little to save this company from going into receivership,” he said.
Wangara said the government must act fast to save the company from any collapse.
Addressing a press conference in Kisumu, Wangara said putting the company in receivership will put at risk thousands of farmers who directly rely on the company.
He warned the government that allowing such institutions to collapse may affect the country vision 2030 dream.
Wangara appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to save his legacy by offering financial support to the company that has been riddled by monetary impropriety.
“This is going to be attest for the Jubilee government, if Mumias goes to receivership then they shall has lost hope from the electorate,” he said.
