Mavoko MP, Patrick Makau has called on the National Government to close down all unregistered schools in Mavoko Sub-county to avoid compromising quality of education in the region.
Speaking at Muthwani Primary School in Athi River District on Thursday while distributing CDF bursary cheques to needy students, Makau raised concern on what he termed alarming rates of mushrooming illegal private schools in the sub-county.
“There are many unregistered private schools both primary and secondary in Mavoko that offer substandard education to our children, all these must be closed down," said Makau.
Makau condemned individuals who establish schools in the region for charity, only to collect money from parents and guardians once the children were admitted.
He said the government should protect such children and parents to ensure quality education claiming some of such schools had form four failures as the teachers.
The legislature who mentioned Athi River's Sunrise High School as an example of such institutions said all schools in Mavoko must be properly registered with relevant authorities and hire qualified teaching staff.
Makau said most of the students who sit for national examination from such private schools fail miserably, hence end up suffering the whole of their lives after their parents and caretakers have been exploited by directors of the institutions.
He called on the Machakos County Government to fast track ECD education in the region by improving infrastructures of the existing centres, alongside adding more in all wards within the county to ensure the children got proper academic foundations.
