The government has sent warning signals to warring families at the controversial Muthera farm in Mau Narok saying stern actions will be taken against those behind incitement.
Njoro deputy county commissioner Mohamed Hassan said that the incitement has led to killings since the start of a legal battle over ownership of the land between the Maasai community and the Koinange family.
He revealed that police were on high alert following mounting tension in Mau Narok after unarmed farmworker was killed using a poisoned arrow in Olepolos two weeks ago.
Addressing residents during the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Njoro, the commissioner said those behind the disputed 4,296-acre piece of land should remain calm as they wait for court verdict instead of being incited to disrupt peace in the area.
Hassan said the government will not seat and watch as incited youth rage terror and destroy property over disputed land that has spanned for years.
He said no farm guards are allowed to guard property armed with poisoned arrow adding that those who will be found will be dealt with as law requires.
“The government will not allow hired goons pausing like security guards while armed with bows and poisoned arrows to create tension in Njoro. We will smoke out those disrupting peaceful coexistence regardless of their status or rank,” he said.
He said more police officers had been deployed in area to avert mounting tension, adding that the government had contained the situation after a peace meeting was held.
Area MP Joseph Kiuna lashed at a senior government officer accused of taking sides on the disputed land and also inciting communities against each other.
The legislator said the government should investigate the officer who is also ‘dishing out money to individuals to disrupt relative peace’ enjoyed by residents.
He cautioned residents against attacking police officers called in to keep law and order, adding that no one should block police officers from performing their duties.
The MP was reacting after rowdy youths armed with clubs and swords turned on Mau Narok deputy OCS Joseph Muchende, injuring him during a dispute that left a 40-year-old man dead two weeks ago.
