The national government is closely working with the county authorities to turn around the sugar sector in the country, Agriculture cabinet secretary Felix Koskei has said.
Speaking during a prayer day at the Chemelil Sugar Academy in Kisumu County Sunday, the CS said they are working round the clock to ensure the sugar sector in the country becomes competitive again.
He said the Kenya Sugar Research Institute is now focusing on identification of good quality sugar varieties.
“They have already shown some positive results, since we already have three varieties that take shorter time to mature,” said the CS.
Sugar cane is the main cash crop in Kisumu County, closely followed by rice, which is majorly produced at the Ahero Irrigation Scheme.
Sugar cane farmers usually take their products to Muhoroni and Chemelil Sugar companies in the county.
