Lari Sub County Community Policing Officer Peter Kiugu told reporters on Thursday that many young people are joining criminal gangs in search for better life.

Speaking to the press Kiugu told youths that joining criminal groups or taking part in crime would not address problems facing them.

“It is sad that most of our youths are opting to join criminal groups. Many youths are taking part in crime because they are desperate to get money,” he said.

Kiugu singled out unemployment as the major cause of rise in crime and called on leaders in both levels of government to act quickly.

Kiugu noted that campaign to sensitise youths on effects of crime are ongoing.

He urged young people to use their Godly given skills to salvage themselves from poverty instead of engaging in crime.

The official further urged the youths to apply for funds from the government and start business. He appealed to the Kiambu county government to draft policies that will completely eradicate unemployment.
