Wajir East Member of Parliament Rashid Kassim has called upon the national government to step up its campaign against drought in the North Eastern Region.
Speaking to the Press on Friday at the Parliamentary building, the lawmaker said that the residents of his region have continued to suffer because of persistent drought over years.
He noted that herders have lost livestock because of prevailing drought, adding that the government needs to protect them from the effects of the lack of rain.
He also urged the government to offer immediate solution to the problems, arguing that several children have been forced to drop out of school because of the lack of fees.
The lawmaker also said that the lack of rain has led to persistent frictions among the communities in the region.
Kassim also condemned the killing of 300 cattle in Laikipia by unknown men under unclear circumstances.
Residents of this region have been forced to travel for several miles to fetch water.
Garissa, Wajir, Mandera and Marsabit are among the counties greatly affected by the ongoing drought.
