[Photo|County Government of Kisumu]A major crackdown on land grabbers in Kisumu has began, following reports that huge areas of land worth hundreds of millions of shillings are in the wrong hands .On Saturday morning Deputy Governor Dr Ochieng' Owili spearheaded the demolition of structures erected on the grabbed Sunset Hotel land.This is pursuant to Gazette Notice No. 1272 of 2/02/2011. The purported title deed to the parcel being held by Charangit Singh Hayer and Surnagar Singh Hayer was revocked and the same reverted back to the hotel.Vide the Physical Planning Act 2015, the Urban Areas and Cities Act 2011 and the County Government Act 2012, the County government as the planning authority, has the power to control or prohibit use or development of land or buildings and revert them for proper and orderly development of the area in the publics interest.Owili disclosed Kisumu County government was planning to build an ultra modern convention facility with an accommodation capacity of 6 - 10 thousand people on the repossessed property. "This will undoubtedly enhance business tourism in Kisumu. Currently there is no such facility in the entire Western Kenya region," he said.
