Residents of Gatundu North Sub County have been requested to circumvent buying meat from distrustful sources to control livestock robbery in the area.
Daniel Nyamiti, the area police commissioner while addressing a gathering in Gakoe shopping centre noted that cattle theft was executed by butchers or their agents who snip animals to slaughter and sell the meat to locals.
Nyamiti unfolded that there were no cattle rustlers in the area, revealing that animals were being stolen by butchers who later sold the meat to the innocent locals.
The commissioner was reacting to claims by seven reported cases of cattle rustling from three homesteads in Gakoe and Muchakai villages.
The police boss added that the cows were either slaughtered or later sold to locals.
"We can stop this vice to the end if you locals stop buying meat from unscrupulous traders. Lack of market for their products will completely curb the robbery," said the commissioner.
Nyamiti asked the local chamber of commerce and industry to help the locals in identifying business people operating unlawful activities to curb the menace.
He further called on Kenya wildlife service to contain lions roaming Kieni location causing havoc to crops and triggering hunger and endurance of poverty.
The commissioner’s sentiments come three day after Gakoe resident decried immense cattle theft where three homesteads had continually been robbed over ten cows.
