Chitago-Borabu Ward MCA Albert Oino has warned the area parents against overworking children following rampant cases of child labour in South Mugirango.
Speaking on Tuesday in his office, Oino gave a stern warning to parents who may be found overworking their children contrary to various children acts.
He said he has received more than ten cases of parents beating and severely injuring children over small matters that could be solved besides receiving other shocking cases of minors working as maids.
“The law is very clear and nobody will be allowed to infringe rights of children. A child has a right to fair treatment and therefore, those found of maliciously beating and giving hard tasks to minors will face the full force of the law,” warned Oino.
He noted that he is also aware of some parents who have employed school children as their maids. This is unacceptable and a quick, serious action will be taken to help tame such acts.
Oino asked the area provincial administrations to apprehend and arraign in court perpetrators of such acts besides saying he will lead the police in a major crackdown soon to rescue some of the children from oppressive parents and ‘employers’.
“This is where chiefs should help us. Since we know some of those errant parents, I will soon go with police officers to rescue some of these young people who should be in school,” said Oino.
