Kisumu South West ward MCA Joseph Abiola has urged parents in the county to stop child labour.

Abiola said exposing children to hard labour is against Kenyan laws.

He said it is worrying to find some parents engaging kids in nanny jobs instead of taking them to school.

“This is against children rights, hence breaking the constitution,” said Abiola.

Section 28 of Kenya constitution states that every child has a right to (e) be protected from exploitative labour practices.

Abiola was supported by nominated MCA Lydia Odhiambo who urged parents to avoid using their children as their labourers but instead employ nannies.

“We need to stop exploiting our children as that is a major offence and any parent found will face the law,” said Odhiambo

Kisumu County assembly minority leader Edwin Anayo also rebuked those who use their children as a source of cheap labour.

“Efforts are underway to curb child labour in our county. We are therefore warning parents to make sure they take their children to school,” said Anayo.
