Matatu operators at the Carwash area in Kisumu have been put on the post for working under the influence of alcohol.
Speaking Wednesday at Carwash area to motorists, Kisumu traffic patrol commandant, Amos Ojwang' noted that the operators were working while drunk contrary to traffic regulations.
The commandant gave a stern warning saying that any matatu crew that found drunk during working hours would face the law.
"This is irresponsible behaviour can easily lead to road accidents due to impaired judgement," he said.
Ojwang said that the police would launch a crackdown to nab rogue alcohol retail shop owners selling alcohol to residents contrary to the 'Mututho' laws.
“We want matatu crew to be responsible and avoid working under the influence of alcohol. We call upon the alcohol retail shops to stop selling alcohol to drivers and conductors before the leave work,” noted Ojwang'.
He says the problem of drunk driving and rowdy touts needs to be controlled with immediate effect to reduce road carnage and bring sanity to the public transport sector in the area.
