Matatu operators have been challenged to be at the forefront in fighting rampant corruption within the transport industry.
Central Rift matatu owners’ association chairman Stephen Muli said that corruption in the transport sector can easily be fought if only drivers and conductors stop giving bribes to police officers.
Muli said corruption is facilitated by both the givers and takers.
“The matatu industry is full of corruption and this can be cleaned up only if our people who are drivers and conductors stopped giving the bribes to police officers,” said Muli.
He also challenged matatu operators to follow traffic rules as one way of avoiding confrontations with the law enforcers.
“I don’t see the reason why you should give a bribe to the police when you have followed all the rules and when your vehicle is in perfect condition,” he said
He spoke in Nakuru when he led matatu operators in taking part in an anti-corruption procession.
