Education Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang'i has commended faith-based sponsors for their role in schools development but cautioned them against harassing TSC appointed principals on matters policy.
Speaking during an education cum prize-giving day at Sironga Girls High School, the CS hailed churches for the good work they are doing in ensuring the smooth-running of learning in schools.
“Our churches are doing a commendable work and as the ministry, we will continue working together to enhance good governance in our schools,” he said on Friday.
The minister however cautioned churches against interfering with the work of the ministry more so during the appointment of school heads.
“When transferring teachers more so principals, we look at performance hence there is no need for sponsors not to interfere when the changes are effected,” Matiang’i said.
He also said the ministry will fund the construction of a dormitory to address congestion at Sironga Girls which has 1,500 students.
According to him, the school had initially received Sh25 million for upgrade to a national status and commended it for registering an improved mean score of over 9.74 in the 2015 KCSE exams.
Former CIC chairman Charles Nyachae and Nyaribari Chache MP Richard Tong’i supported the CS’s reform agenda in the ministry urging him to remain steadfast.
The two, however, hinted that the CS should be prepared to tackle apparent hostility and incitement from those who disapproved of his way of working.
Sironga Girls principal Hellen Nyabuto had earlier indicated challenges facing the school during Matiang’i's meeting with her colleagues from the area.
