Bonchari Member of Parliament Zebedeo Opore has dismissed calls by the Cord coalition and the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) over the disbandment of the Kenya’s electoral body, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) .
Describing their campaign as an exercise in futility, Opore said that there existed laid down constitutional provisions that could lead to the disbandment of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and not political rhetoric.
The legislator said that the Cord coalition and the NCCK should stop misleading Kenyans into believing that their rhetoric could disband IEBC without following the law.
“The CORD coalition has members and several MPs in parliament who clearly understand the parliamentary procedures that need to be followed to disband IEBC. Let them come to the floor of the house convince the members instead of wasting time in public rallies,” he added.
Opore, who is the MP of Bonchari was speaking on Sunday at Suneka township where he addressed a number of traders.
“The NCCK doesn’t speak for the people of Kenya. Who are they to predict that there will be violence in 2017? These are prophets of doom and Kenyans should ignore them”, he added
He urged leaders to redirect their energy into uniting Kenyans ahead of next year’s general elections instead of issuing ‘reckless statements’.
“When you are a leader you should preach peace and reconciliation. And that is exactly what we expect from them (NCCK)”, he said.
