Former Machakos senator Johnson Muthama now wants embattled Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati to quietly resign.
Muthama says Chebukati should stop sideshows and quit office for failing to manage the polls agency.
In an interview with journalist's in Nairobi on Thursday, Muthama asked the IEBC boss to own the mistakes that have taken place at the commission under his watch.
He said Chebukati failed to provide leadership and proper supervision of his staff leading to the bungled August, 8 2017 presidential poll that was nullified by the Supreme Court.
“Wafula Chebukati should accept that his fate has been sealed and stop sideshows because they will not save him,” Muthama said.
Muthama said Chebukati could have been safe now if he had listened to the demands the opposition was making prior to the October 26, 2017 repeat presidential election.
He said the commission's chairman blatantly dismissed the reforms push that included demand for CEO Ezra Chiloba’s resignation.
“We saw the problems at IEBC long time ago, advised Chebukati on how to address them but he refused. He should now follow suit and resign just like other commissioner's are doing,” Muthama added.
Muthama said the country needs serious electoral reforms moving forward.
He said future election's will be bungled unless proper measures and systems are put in place.
Chebukati is under pressure to resign after three of his commissioner’s quit office on Monday.
Vice chairperson Connie Maina, commissioner's Paul Kurgat and Margaret Mwachanya resigned on Monday over what they termed as Chebukati’s failure to provide leadership at the polls agency.
