Residents of Obunga Slums in Kisumu County have raised an alarm over the increasing number of stray dogs in the area.
The locals claim that the population of the dogs has steadily been rising for the past two months and local mechanism to get rid of them have failed.
“Every day you spot new dogs in this area and they never leave, we do not know what is attracting them to our place. We try chasing them away and they keep on coming back,” said Sharon Omondi a house help from the Slums.
Majority of the people are scared that the dogs might be a source of diseases to them adding that the structures in the Slums are poorly done making it is easier for the dogs to access their houses.
“Sometimes we find dogs in our houses scavenging for food, and they do not look healthy. We do not know what will happen if they come into contact with human food,” said Tom Owek a resident from Obunga.
According to the residents, the dogs sometimes get hostile when we try to drive them away and fear that they might be bitten by the dog in the process.
Many open food vendors have seen the number of customers reduce because the dogs usually loiter around their premises looking for food.
Since they have been unable to get rid of them, they are now calling on the Kisumu County government to come to their rescue before it is too late.
