Ruiru MP Esther Gathogo has expressed concern over the increased number of street families in her area.
Saying that the families are running away from Nairobi to Ruiru, the MP cited the removal of street children from Nairobi streets by the Nairobi County government.
The move in Nairobi is meant to have the street families moved to places where they can rehabilitated. Some have attributed the moving to the visit by US President Barack Obama on Friday.
Gathogo said that stealing, handbag snatching and pickpocketing cases are on the rise. She said that in the last two weeks, little children have been seen on the streets of Ruiru mostly at night.
“These children are on the run from Nairobi and they are flocking my area causing discomfort to residents,” Gathogo said.
The legislator has called on the Kiambu County government to ensure they reduce the number of the families by rehabilitating them in a safe place.
According to area OCPD Isaac Thuranira, the police on patrol have been raising the alarm over the same issue. Thuranira said they are allegedly working on strategies with the county government of Kiambu to ensure they have a safe place to keep them if they are arrested.
He added that they will take those caught in crime in the area into police custody.
The two were speaking in Ruiru on Monday.
