A directive by Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho to the County Inspectorate Department to relocate street families is set to be implemented on Friday.
Joho had directed the families to be removed from the streets about a month ago, but the order is yet to be implemented.
Mombasa County Inspectorate Department head Naheed Musa said the directive had been put on hold following a request by an NGO and Human Rights activists to be given a chance to help the families.
"We should have removed them from the streets but an NGO gave us a request saying they would hold workshops and initiate programmes to either rehabilitate or help them," said Musa.
"We shall implement the orders on Friday if the NGO does not solve the problem," he added.
Seaking during the end of a two-day workshop for street families at Darajani Hotel on Sunday, Huria CEO Yusuf Lule said that they intend to empower the families economically, as well as sensitise them on the effects of drug abuse.
"We want to empower street families to start and manage small scale businesses, by pulling them out of drug addiction and giving them another chance in life," said Lule.
