Addressing members of the public in Athi River town on Saturday, Makau disputed perceptions that the project had been implemented by the Machakos County Government.

Makau said he personally made a proposal to the national government and lobbied for its implementation after seeing the need, following residents’ request.

"I personally drafted a proposal and made a request to the national government through parliamentary committee in charge of energy having received requests from the residents," said Makau.

He said apart from improving the area's security, he also wanted the project to be a model for emulation by the county government to light other parts of the county.

Makau said the interchange that has tunnels and by passes was very risky both at day and night.

The lawmaker revealed that several motorists plying on both Namanga and Mombasa roads had reportedly been mugged at the interchange and robbed of their valuables including vehicles even in broad day light.

He called on Machakos County Government to emulate the project to light all parts of the county in a bid of improving livelihoods alongside enhancing residents' security.

The lighting project comprising of several street lights powered by solar energy during the day and wind power at night, has for a long time been perceived to be an initiative of the County Government of Machakos.
