The Machakos County government has sacked over 140 striking casual workers attached to various departments.

In a statement signed by County Executive Member for Decentralized Units, County Administration and Solid Waste Management, George Kioko Luka, the county government announced some 158 casuals out of the total 302 who had applied for permanent and pensionable jobs are likely to be hired.

The development followed a strike called on Thursday by some County Workers Union leaders over alleged unpaid salaries and allowances running into millions of shillings.

But Mr Luka, who addressed a press conference in Machakos town accompanied by chief officers in charge of Decentralized Units and Solid Waste Management, Robert Maitha and Collins Sila respectively said the County Public Service Board had already begun conducting interviews for those who had applied for the jobs.

“Those who will be recruited by county public service board will be issued with letters of appointment on permanent and pensionable terms,” he said. He went on: “The doors are now closed for those who did not apply and decided to engage in noise making on the streets.”

Mr Luka also directed former employees who may be in possession of uniform and handcuffs to surrender the same to the commandant of county inspectorate with immediate effect.

“County police commander Machakos is advised that any former county staff driving vehicles purchased by the county government for regular and administration police and who are no longer employees of the county government be arrested,” he said.
