Strong winds on Friday afternoon blew off the roof of Nyasagati Primary School in remote Riana ward of Kisii County leaving 426 pupils with no roof over their heads.
Consequently, the school board of management (BoM) has closed the school down till further notice. The winds completely destroyed the roof tops during the 1.40 pm incident according to BoM Chairperson Douglas Nyakwara.
The school management and local administrators have called for urgent intervention to repair the roof so that learning at the school can resume.
Confirming the incident the area Assistant Chief Joseph Mosumari told journalists that nobody was injured during the incident that took place at lunch time.
He said the school was built in 1976 and that the roof was too old and rusty, hence it could not resist the strong winds that hit the area adding that the school compound did not have trees to act as windbreakers.
“I appeal to the national and the county governments and non-governmental organizations to urgently come to the aid of the school to ensure learning continues uninterrupted,” said Mosumari
The Chief said that they will push the area county education officials as well as stakeholders to ensure that the School gets back its roof.
