Kisumu County government has been asked to expand and upgrade public universities in the county.

Kenya Universities Students Organization (KUSO), Secretary General Charles Juma asked the county government to expand and upgrade the public universities in the county, saying that would make them to be at par with other universities in the country.

Juma noted that the county’s Maseno University has dilapidated buildings and infrastructure, adding that no development has taken place in the facility for a very long time.

“Let Governor Ranguma’s government support education in the county by improving and upgrading the existing universities so that they can also meet then international standards of other universities,” said Juma.

“Maseno University is the major public university in Kisumu, and that is why the government should allocate funds towards upgrading the institution,” added Juma.

Juma, who also the Students Organization of Maseno University president accused the university council and administration of not taking the university’s development seriously.

“The Vice Chancellor together with the entire university council has failed in upgrading the university to modern and internationally acceptable standards,” he noted.

“I am calling upon the county government to come to our rescue so that the county can also boast of an ultra-modern university that can attract students from all parts of the country,” he said.

Somu Secretary General Symanne Sammy also asked the county government to consider building new hostels and classes for the university to help curb the problem of inadequate accommodation and learning facilities.
