The University of Nairobi has been ordered by the High Court in Kisumu to pay a former student Sh500 000 as compensation for withholding his certificates.
The institution had help the student's papers claiming he acquired them fraudulently.
While giving the ruling, Justice David Majanja said the compensation was to cater for the general damages for violating his right to fair administrative action.
Majanja said that Alfred Arunga, the petitioner, had to move the court to get back his documents.
The court also awarded Arunga a further Sh50, 000 as compensation for the costs.
“The totality of the evidence before the court is that although the University knew of the allegations against the petitioner, it never informed the petitioner and proceeded to take adverse and arbitrary action against him,” said Justice Majanja.
