One student died on Thursday after consuming ethanol at Kolowa Secondary School in Baringo.
The student was admitted alongside six other students who is still recovering.
Two of the students are currently undergoing treatment at Mercy Private Hospital in Eldama-Ravine sub-county following the Tuesday incident.
James Orodi, the hospital’s Clinical Officer, said they received three students at around 3pm on Thursday.
He said they were referred from Parpello Mission Hospital in Tiaty sub-county but unfortunately one of the girls died while being treated.
“Five of them are in stable condition after being administered with ethanol which is an antidote to neutralise the chemical. We are yet to get information from the principal who promised to come and assess the student’s treatment progress,” Orodi said.
The medic advised that schools should have laboratory ethics which should be followed to avoid such incidents in future.”During a practical, there must be a lab technician who is to ensure that students don’t tamper with any dangerous chemicals.”
Zakayo Domokong, the head teacher, said the students broke into the school laboratory and stole the whole container of methanol. He added that ten of them, spreading from form one to form four, consumed the chemical.
“Those who drunk the methanol without mixing with water developed severe symptoms,” Domokong said.
