Students at Maseno University's main campus which is home to approximately 10,000 comrades have been crying foul over the prolonged academic calendar that they have had to endure.
The university's academic year 2017-2018 began in September last year after a series of postponements due to the August 2017 General elections.
As a tradition, the university commences its first semester of each academic year in mid August, however this did not materialise since the election petition that followed up the general election brought a lot of uncertainty about the stability of the country.
The semester was therefore pushed to 5th September, this date was further pushed forward due to the nullification of the presidential election and eventually the semester began on 11th September.
The semester started smoothly until the repeat presidential election when the varsity went on a two week break. After the break, the final nail on the coffin would be struck when UASU issued a strike notice in November to protest the unfaithfulness of the government in implementing their CBA.
This led to stagnating of learning activities as lectures absconded duty in solidarity with their colleagues nationwide.
The situation would persist till December when eventually the semester was suspend till January 6th.
Come January 6th, learning resumed normally and although the students complained about the semester being taught in just a month, all this cries fell on deaf ears.
The end of semester exams were scheduled for the 12th of February but the exams were again pushed forward by two weeks to 26th February to sort missing mark issues.
On 20th of this month, the resumption of exams was confirmed as being Monday 26th Feb but with it came another blow, UASU issued another 7 day strike notice with effect from 21st February.
This has led to lamentations from students who have complained about one semester running for a whole 7 months which just falls short of an academic year by one month.
At the same time, they have complained of being broke since HELB has been disbursed twice while they still are taking a single semester.
The students call on the administration to come up with measures to help sort out such issues.
