Garissa Teachers Training College students have defied orders to resume school since the college re-opened last month.

The students, especially third years have been camping at the Education's Ministry headquarters in Nairobi demanding transfers to other teachers' colleges that are not in the north eastern region.

Speaking to journalists on Monday in Nairobi, the students said they will not go back to Garissa.

“If the Al shabaab militias have the guts to attack a military camp, what about students like us who do not even know how to fight?" asked Henry Akeno, a student at the college.

The students have said that they have been living in fear since their counterparts at Garissa University College were attacked and massacred in April.

“You cannot concentrate on your studies when you think of what could befall you at anytime. We have no peace at all and we ask Kaimenyi to approve our transfers,” said Hellen Nyandieke, a student.

The students have added that they are psychologically tortured, something which they say is affecting their studies.

“The college administration has also refused to surrender our high school certificates that they take on admission. Most of us third years have less than two months to sit for the finals but we do not know what will happen,” said Dickson Ndathi, a student.
