James Kariuki, fourth-year student at Meru University of Agriculture and Technology has invented a sensor Automatic irrigation system and a Sensor Automation System that is expected to reduce the time through which the farmers irrigate their crops.

How the automatic irrigation sensor works

Daniel said that the system is connected with farmers’ phone so that it can send the message to either open a specific water valve or turn off specific water pump.

The irrigation system is made up of drip lines which are divided into different portions and the water is channeled to each portion through automated valve that also supplies water to the rest of the drip lines.

Whenever the system fails and the soil dries up, the farmer will receive a message on phone instantly informing them of the problem.

The system is expected to reduce labour cost and reduce water wastage since it does not have to be monitored by the farmer.
