When schools reopened on Monday 29th August, parents were met with new fee additions on the normal term fees. This comes after school properties were destroyed in the wake of arson attacks in secondary schools across the country. Over 100 schools were affected with property worth over Sh500 million destroyed. To help deter future occurrences of the arson attacks, Education CS, Fred Matiang'i barred schools from accepting students from affected schools. He also added that the government nor the Education Ministry was going to incur any financial costs of rebuilding the schools. This move should be lauded by every single Kenyan in the country who values education. It is very wrong for students to resort to violence to solve their grievances. For example, Itiero Boys High School in Kisii county lost 7 dormitories for students allegedly being denied the chance of watching a football match. In the end, parents have to cough an extra Sh10,000 to cater for the damages. But since when did football matches become part of the curriculum in schools? As parents shift their anger and frustrations to Education CS Matiang'i, they should know that they failed to raise the right citizens in the society. They should pay up and help rebuild the schools their sons and daughters destroyed during the second term fiery fiasco. In the future, they will do better in advising their students against burning down schools. As Matiang'i fights to curb cheating in KCSE and KCPE examinations, all education stakeholders should back his efforts. There is no way the country's education system will continue being derailed by a few individuals not interested in acquiring knowledge. Future occurrences of school arson attacks should not be witnessed. Those students found guilty after thorough investigations should be jailed to serve as an example to others with the same idea.
