Egerton University students went on rampage Saturday night over what they claimed as interference in their examinations by the university management through tough rules imposed on them.
The students said that the institution has had intermittent power blackouts that are interfering with their studies.
The students claimed that the university management has imposed tough and punitive rules regarding to the satisfaction of university in rewarding of degree courses.
The students alleged that the university management has made many students to sit for supplementary exams in spite satisfying requirements to be awarded for the degrees by the university management.
“We are experiencing constant blackouts at least every day,” said Thomas Okello, a third year student in the faculty of commerce, adding that this was affecting their studies.
The students set ablaze the cafeteria room and other structures within the campus.
A number of students seized the opportunity and went on a looting spree in the campus.
A business woman, Agnes Kahuia, bore the worst brunt of the rampage after rogue students invaded her salon business and looted it, losing goods worth Sh 1.5 million.
“The students looted my salon, stole money and damaged property,” said Kahuia.
Confirming the incident Nyoro police boss Fred Lari said that anti-riot police from Nyoro police station arrived and contained the demonstration.
“We arrested 10 students after suppressing the protestors,” said Lari.
