Maseno University students living at Siriba campus have raised concern over the increase in the number of stray dogs at Mabungo and Nyawita market.
The number of such dogs is on the rise in the two markets, something that the students feel poses a risk to their security as they risk being beaten especially during early mornings and evenings.
According to Jane Ong’ayo, a trader at Nyawita market, the dogs have been attracted to food being disposed from the many hotels and food vending outlets at the market.
“Such dogs have been abandoned by the owners,” she said.
Speaking to Nelly Chepkirui, a student, she said that the presence of the dogs scares many.
Amos Osumbi, a student resident at Mabungo said despite the dogs posing a security risk, they are also a hygiene risk as they defecate all over the area causing foul smell around the market and places of residence.
The students want the owners of the dogs to be responsible for their dogs.
They should fish them out of the market, lock them inside kernels and give them enough food as it is alleged that the dogs are after food from the market, the residents said.
A bite from such unattended dogs easily leads to rabies.
