Maseno University students on Friday heaved a sigh of relief after they received their Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans disbursement.

This came as a suprise as the Board had earlier announced that it would disburse the money as from February 25, since that's when the university’s second semester officially begins.

Students at the institution had expressed fear of missing their exams as a good number of them had not yet cleared their school fees.

A majority of the students rely on the HELB loan to pay their school fees.

The varsity students lauded the Board for heeding to their call to release the money.

"I am glad the money is now here. I don't know how I would have sat exams," said Martin Macharia, a third-year student.

"I would love to thank the Board for releasing the money. Honestly many students would have found it difficult sitting exams due to fee issues," said James Odhiambo, a second-year student.

The students had earlier urged the university administration to be lenient on them and allow them to sit their exams despite having fees arrears.

"I was worried how I was going to sit this semester's exams without completing my school fees. I really thank the Board for disbursing the money at such a crucial time," said Elizabeth Nafula.

The administration, through its DVC Academics Mary Kipsat, had however maintained that no student would sit the exams without clearing the semester's fee.

Maseno University exams are scheduled to begin on February 13.
