A number of Maseno University students were stranded in the university after it was shut indefinitely following campaign riots on Monday.

Mpesa-Joints and other business premises remained closed down for fear of looting by students. This therefore meant that a number of students could not get places to withdraw money for bus fare home. The only Mpesa outlet which was open was forced to close down after students fought to make withdrawals.

“I am stranded. I haven’t eaten since yesterday as food joints have closed down. Police are not giving us a breathing space. I can’t withdraw any money to get fare home. I am now forced to stay in a friends place hoping things will come back to normal,” lamented Mike Ogolla, a student.

The students were given 30 minutes to vacate university premises as anti-riot police officers waited to effect the orders.

“I can’t risk after students looted my shop yesterday. I am hoping calm will be restored,” said James Mwangi who runs a shop in Maseno.
